English as Another Language (EAL) Class
Our English as Another Language (EAL) classes are delivered by instructors who are members of the Alberta Teachers as a Second Language (ATESL). Courses are run on a not-for-profit recovery basis, with a small fee being charged. Please be noted that our adult EAL classes do NOT provide childcare services.
Our EAL courses are offered through three terms a year: Fall, Winter, and Spring, at various locations in Edmonton. All EAL courses incorporate one or more of the following subjects:
- Adult Basic Literacy
Offers basic literacy to adults who want to upgrade their reading, numerical, and writing skills. Students will practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is on listening, understanding, and verbal skills.
- Health and Wellness
This ESL course incorporates elements of preventative health. It provides students with a practical approach to remaining healthy and fit as they learn English. The focus is on health, fitness, nutrition, and preventative measures.
- Community and Personal Support
This subject deals with various community issues such as family violence and drug abuse.
- Citizenship Education
Orients adults new to Canada to Canadian life. It discusses social, economic, and political forces in Canada while helping students acquire knowledge of Canada’s fundamental and democratic rights and freedoms, as well as their responsibilities as Canadian citizens.
- Human and Legal Rights
This subject informs students on the rights and freedoms that Canadian citizens enjoy and practice in Canada.
